Identity An apartment for a three-member family
in a downtown apartment building in Chalkis. The family was in need of an
additional bedroom in order to provide separate bedrooms for the growing
teenage children.
Organization The solution was an inventive way to use the
limited space of the apartment by bringing the living quarter to the center
of the house, thus freeing up the external rooms as bedrooms - and therefore
adding an additional bedroom to the house. The centrally located living
room, is daylit by clerestory windows. As a result, the design solution
provided privacy for the bedrooms and an open-space living area including
the living room, kitchen and dining.
Materials Concrete blocks, extensive use of wood, glass and
mirrors at the top clerestory band of the living areas, to maximize daylight.
The apartment renovation was completed in 1994.
